The New Winter Songbook

Coming in 2025

Rebecca is excited to be curating The New Winter Songbook project next year:

'I bring my past, I bring my future
I bring my rights and I bring my song.'

Belong by Lemn Sissay

The New Winter Songbook will be a song collection for voice and piano written, curated and performed by living composers, poets, community participants in Kirklees, Huddersfield and East London, Manchester students and professional musicians. The project will oversee the creation of a songbook of repertoire reflecting the diverse ethnicity, cultures, faiths and outlooks of artists and communities living through winter in the UK in the 2020s, reinvigorating the genre of seasonal art song.

The New Winter Songbook will feature 8 brand new commissions alongside up to 14 first recordings of songs by living composers. The album will be recorded by Rebecca Lea (soprano) and Caroline Jaya Ratnam and released in November 2025 on the Convivium record label. Its release will be marked by 3 launch concerts in Huddersfield, Manchester and London. The project will also oversee the creation of a dedicated New Winter Songbook website, featuring filmed performances and further information about the songs and those involved in their creation and performance…… watch this space!

This page will be updated as the project develops so please do check back over the coming months for further information.

This project is being developed with the support of the Arts Council England, the Finzi Friends, the Francis Routh Trust and the Marchus Trust.
